What the interviewer is really asking
Gauge collaboration skills, role clarity, and ability to contribute within a group.
What to say
- Set the context: size of the team, the goal, and your specific role.
- Highlight a concrete contribution you made that helped the team succeed.
- Mention how you coordinated or communicated with others — meetings, shared docs, status updates.
What to avoid
- Don't describe yourself as the lone hero who saved the team.
- Avoid saying 'we' throughout with no specifics about what you personally did.
- Don't pick an example where the team ultimately failed and leave it there.
Example answers
Strong: On a four-person project team I was responsible for the data pipeline. I posted daily status updates in our shared channel so everyone knew what I'd completed and what was blocked. When one teammate fell behind on the front-end integration, I helped debug their API calls so we still hit the demo deadline.
Weak: We all worked together and it went great.
