How do you prefer to receive feedback and guidance from a manager or mentor?

What the interviewer is really asking
Assess self-awareness and communication style to gauge fit with the team's management approach.
What to say
- Be specific about a format that actually works for you — written vs. verbal, real-time vs. scheduled, direct vs. conversational.
- Show you're adaptable if the team's style differs from your preference.
- Give a brief example of feedback you received well in a previous setting.
What to avoid
- Don't say 'any style is fine' — that signals you haven't thought about it.
- Avoid implying you only want positive feedback or find criticism hard.
- Don't demand a specific cadence ('I need weekly 1:1s') without flexibility.
Example answers
Strong: I do best with direct, specific feedback. On a recent side project I worked on with a senior developer, they gave written comments on each deliverable and I found that really actionable — I could re-read it and act on each point. I'm also happy to ask clarifying questions if something's unclear rather than guessing.
Weak: I just want to be told if I'm doing something wrong.
