See the computer as four layers, and let the standard, not the shape, decide the fit

Every part in this domain lives in one of four layers of a working computer: a foundation of the motherboard, its power supply, and its cooling; a core of the parts that compute and remember, the CPU (central processing unit), the RAM (random-access memory), and the drives; the cabling that carries video, data, power, and network signals between them; and the peripherals attached at the edge. At a quarter of the exam, Hardware is one of its two heaviest domains, so the four layers repay knowing cold. One instinct ties them together and wins most questions here: confirm a part physically and electrically fits the standard it plugs into before you weigh how fast it is. The classic trap is reading capability from a silhouette, because a connector, a socket, or a slot names the family but never the ceiling, so an M.2 stick may speak either SATA (Serial ATA) or NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), a USB-C port may be data only, and DDR4 and DDR5 memory will not share a slot even where the pin count matches.

The guide walks the layers in a deliberate order. RAM, CPUs, and Storage is the compute-and-memory core: choose a CPU by socket and chipset, memory by DDR (double data rate) generation, and a drive by its interface and form factor, and reach here first for any question about whether parts work together or which is faster. Cables and Connectors is the wiring that links those parts and reaches the outside world: identify a cable by the connector on each end, then match the version or category behind it to the speed, resolution, and length the run needs. Peripheral Devices covers the input and output gear hanging off the box, printers above all, plus scanners, webcams, and KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switches, where the through-line is the same install order every time: connect, load a driver, configure. Motherboards and Power is the foundation the rest mounts to, the board and its BIOS or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) firmware, the power supply that feeds it, and the cooling that keeps it alive, so it comes last in reading order even though it physically hosts everything above.

When two parts both fit, the exam rewards the one that matches the spec and leaves headroom

A+ hardware questions rarely turn on raw speed. When two options both physically seat, the credited answer is usually the one that matches the exact standard the slot, socket, or code demands, among them the right DDR generation, the drive protocol the M.2 slot is actually wired for, the PCIe (PCI Express) generation, or the plenum-rated jacket that fire code demands, rather than the biggest number in the catalog. The second half of that instinct is headroom: heat needs a path out, so a cooler wants a thin, even layer of thermal paste and balanced case airflow, and power needs margin, so a power supply is sized above the system's continuous draw on the +12 V rail rather than exactly to it. Speed and capacity are tie-breakers you reach for only after fit, the standard, and headroom are settled.
